BEYOND GOOD INTENTIONS
A Gentle Call to Follow Through
“Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” —1 John 3:18 (ESV) I think we’ve all been there. We meant to call. We planned to stop by. We even thought about sending that text, baking that bread, helping with that responsibility… but somehow, we didn’t. It’s not that we didn’t care. It’s just… life got in the way. Or maybe we figured, “They’ll understand.” And maybe they do. But here’s the thing…our good intentions didn’t put gas in their car, or food on their table, or hope back in their heart. Our hopeful thoughts truly didn’t help. This is where it gets a little uncomfortable. Sometimes we pat ourselves on the back for wanting to do the right thing. It feels almost as if we already did it. That little glow of good intention is enough to quiet our conscience for the moment… but nothing has changed for the person we meant to bless or help. Jesus told a simple story about two sons. The father asked them both to work in the vineyard. One said “yes” but never showed up. The other said “no” but later went. Which one did his father’s will? The answer is obvious…it’s the one who actually went. (Matthew 21:28–31) Beloved, God is looking for those who bridge the gap between promise and performance. Not perfect people. Not loud, flashy people. Just faithful ones. People who don’t merely say they’ll pray, but take a quiet moment to lift that name before the throne. People who don’t just nod in sympathy, but roll up their sleeves and carry the load. Every small act of follow-through matters. You may think it’s nothing, but Heaven sees. A simple phone call can remind someone they are not forgotten. A card in the mail can break the back of loneliness. A timely gift can meet a need no one else knew about. And here’s the beauty—you don’t have to do it all at once. You don’t have to save the world in a day. You just take the step in front of you. Then the next one. And the next. Dear friend, let’s not just mean well…let’s do well. Let’s be people whose kindness isn’t just an idea, but a reality. Whose promises are more than words. Whose love has legs and walks right into someone’s need. Because at the end of the day, it’s not the thought that changes a life. It’s the action that follows.
