CALLED BLESSED
A Devotion at the Graveside
“Her children rise up and call her blessed…”
—Proverbs 31:28 (NKJV)
Not long ago I buried my dad.
In Andover, Ohio.
Right beside my mom.
The earth opened, and we laid him down where she already rests.
Two names carved in stone. Side by side. As they always were.
Family gathered close. Children. Grandchildren.
Tears fell. Hugs lingered. Silence spoke louder than words.
The ground was cool, yet the air was full of warmth…memories pressed into us like an unseen hand.
We remembered her prayers.
We remembered his strength.
We remembered the little things…like how they loved one another and us through every season. In that moment I understood the Scripture in a way I never had before. “Her children rise up and call her blessed.” Yes… we did. We called them both blessed. Blessed for their faith. Blessed for their love. Blessed for the example they left behind. It didn’t feel like an ending. It felt like a torch was being passed. A reminder that legacy is not measured in money or houses or fame. Legacy is measured in faithfulness. In prayer whispered at night. In love lived out when no one else is watching. Beloved, one day each of us will be remembered too. What will our children rise up and say? Will they call us blessed? Will they see in us the quiet, steady love of God? The graveside whispers this truth: life is short. Eternity is near. But the seeds we plant here live on. Heritage. Legacy. Memory. Testimony. We are writing tomorrow’s story today. So live in such a way that your children…and their children…will stand at your grave one day and whisper through tears: they were blessed… and so are we.
