EMPTY PALACES
Building for Time or Eternity?
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Mark 8:36)
Good morning my precious friends, let me share what the Lord is showing me about the difference between temporal dwellings and eternal mansions.
Picture with me Herod's grand fortress, the Herodium, rising from the Judean Desert – a testament to human achievement and royal power. Herod spared no expense, creating luxurious living quarters, elaborate bathhouses, and even designing his own magnificent tomb. Oh, how he labored to leave his mark on earth! But beloved, while he built palaces for time, he neglected to prepare for eternity.
Now, shift your gaze to our own United States White House, that symbol of earthly power and prestige. Through its halls have walked presidents wielding tremendous influence, enjoying historical significance, basking in worldly honor. Yet I wonder, with a heart heavy with eternal perspective, how many of these prestigious leaders may be facing eternal flames today? They lived at America's most famous address, but did they secure their eternal dwelling?
I sense in my spirit that many of us are like Herod and these presidents, investing everything in our earthly dwellings while leaving our heavenly mansions unbuilt. We're so busy constructing our kingdoms here that we forget about our inheritance there.
Watch what remains of Herod's grand palace today – ruins. Beautiful ruins, yes, but still just fragments of former glory. Even the White House, with all its splendor, is just a temporary residence. Four years, eight years – then what? All the wealth, all the power, all the prestige – what do they matter in eternity?
I hear the Spirit asking: What are you building for eternity? When your earthly palace crumbles – and it will – what treasure will you have laid up in heaven? When your temporal kingdom falls – and it must – what eternal inheritance will await you?
Beloved, this isn't about condemning success or earthly achievements. But oh, how the Father's heart breaks to see people rise to such heights of earthly power, yet potentially miss heaven's glory! While Herod built with stone and mortar, we're called to build with faith and love. While presidents govern temporal kingdoms, we're called to invest in an eternal one.
Think of it:
- Herod's palace took years to build but crumbled with time
- The White House houses temporary power but offers no eternal security
- Heaven's mansions take faith to build but last forever
- Our heavenly dwelling secures our eternal future in Christ
I sense the Lord saying that some of you are at a crossroads today. Like Herod and those presidents, you have the opportunity to build – but what will you build for? Will you invest everything in temporal success while neglecting eternal significance? Will you decorate earthly rooms while leaving heavenly mansions empty?
Rise up, precious ones! Build wisely! Invest eternally! For every act of love, every sacrifice of faith, every moment of obedience is adding to your heavenly dwelling. While others build monuments to themselves, build monuments to His grace. While others secure earthly kingdoms, secure your eternal inheritance.
Let these empty palaces remind us:
- Earth's grandest achievements cannot compare to heaven's simplest glories
- Temporal power cannot purchase eternal peace
- Worldly success cannot secure spiritual significance
- Famous addresses mean nothing without a heavenly home
Today, beloved, examine your building projects. Are you constructing walls or bridges? Are you building for time or eternity? Are you investing in temporary kingdoms or the eternal Kingdom?
For one day, all earthly palaces will lie in ruins. All temporal kingdoms will fall. All human achievements will fade. But what we've built in Christ – every act of love, every work of faith, every sacrifice of praise – will shine forever in our Father's house.
Choose wisely what you build. Build for eternity. For unlike Herod's crumbling palace or the temporary residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the mansions of heaven will never fade away.
With Love,
Steve Porter
