FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS
The Sacred Call to Carry the Life of Jesus Into a Weary World
“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” — 1 Peter 2:21 (NIV) “Hear my cry, hear my call Hold my hand lest I fall Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.” — Thomas A. Dorsey Beloved… there are moments in Scripture where the Holy Spirit does not merely teach—He calls. Not gently. Not casually. But with holy weight. And this is one of those moments. Peter begins with words that are so direct… so piercing… so final… that they feel like the trumpet call of heaven itself: “To this you were called…” Not to comfort. Not to popularity. Not to a life where everything is neat, predictable, and safe. But to this. It’s as though the Spirit pulls us out of the noise… out of the rush… out of the endless questions that swirl in our minds… And He points with a steady finger to one sacred path and says: “Right there. That is your calling.” I can almost see it… A crowd of weary believers standing in front of Peter. Some are wounded. Some are confused. Some are exhausted. Some feel forgotten. Some are asking the same question that so many hearts still whisper in our generation: “Lord… what am I supposed to do with my life?” And Peter, with the tenderness of a father… and the authority of a man who has been broken and rebuilt by grace… speaks like a wise elder who has walked with Jesus long enough to know what matters most. And he says: “To this you were called…” In other words… This is not a suggestion. This is not for a few. This is the path of every true disciple. BECAUSE CHRIST SUFFERED FOR YOU Peter doesn’t let us drift into vague spirituality. He takes our face in his hands, and he turns our eyes toward the Cross. “Because Christ suffered for you…” Beloved… we throw that word around so easily—suffered. But heaven does not use it lightly. Christ did not merely suffer in theory. He suffered in His body. He suffered in His soul. He suffered in His breath. He suffered in His blood. He suffered in His loneliness. He suffered in His silence. He was beaten—again, and again, and again—until the human eye could hardly recognize Him. His back was torn open. Not scraped. Not bruised. Torn. Then a crown of thorns was pressed into His head… that holy head… that radiant head… the same head that will wear the crown of eternal dominion forever and ever. They didn’t crown Him with gold. They crowned Him with mockery. And still… He didn’t call the angels. He didn’t strike them down. He didn’t step off the path. He walked forward… and forward… and forward… Not because nails could hold Him. But because love would not let Him turn back. A heavy wooden cross pressed into torn flesh. Every step drove the thorns deeper. Every fall bruised bone and opened skin. The dust of the earth mixed with the blood of the Son of God. And then… they lifted Him up. Hands nailed. Feet nailed. Every breath became a battle. Every inhale stole strength. Every exhale carried pain. Hours passed. The sky grew dark. The earth trembled. Hell rejoiced. And then the moment that no human heart can fully comprehend… The Father turned His face away. The sin of the world—your sin… my sin… the darkest things we never told anyone… the failure that still haunts the mind… the secret guilt… the compromise… the rebellion… the hatred… the lust… the pride… All of it… placed upon Him. And Jesus cried with a voice that has echoed through eternity: “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Beloved… He didn’t suffer because He had to. He suffered because He chose you. He suffered because your soul was worth the price. He suffered because mercy was stronger than justice. He suffered because love had already decided: I will have them back. LEAVING YOU AN EXAMPLE And Peter says… “Leaving you an example…” Not only a sacrifice to admire. But a life to follow. Not only a Cross to sing about… But a pathway to walk. And then I remember who is writing this. This is Peter. The man who once promised, “Even if everyone leaves You, I never will.” The man who drew his sword in religious fire… and then lost his courage in a servant girl’s question. The man who denied Jesus… not once… not twice… But three times. And the third time… the rooster crowed… …and Jesus turned and looked at him. Not with rage. Not with disgust. Not with rejection. But with that look that breaks a man open. The Bible says Peter went out and wept bitterly. He didn’t just cry. He collapsed. He was the disciple who failed publicly. He was the one who broke his own promises. He was the one who couldn’t stand when it mattered most. And yet… After the Resurrection… heaven sent a message that still melts me every time I read it: “Go… tell His disciples… and Peter.” And Peter. Not because Peter deserved it… But because Jesus never stopped loving the one who fell. Beloved… I don’t know what you’ve done. I don’t know what you’ve carried. I don’t know what nights you’ve lived through. But I know this… Jesus still says, “And you.” THE ROAD BACK TO POWER Peter didn’t just get forgiven. He got restored. He didn’t just get welcomed back into the circle. He got remade. Jesus met him again… and not in a temple… not in a pulpit… But by the sea. Jesus cooked breakfast. Because sometimes the deepest healing doesn’t come through thunder… It comes through tenderness. A fire on the shore. Bread. Fish. A quiet moment. And then the question: “Do you love Me?” Not, “Why did you fail?” Not, “How could you deny Me?” Just… “Do you love Me?” Three times. The same number as Peter’s denial. Jesus wasn’t rubbing it in. He was lifting him out. And then Jesus spoke the words that rebuilt Peter’s shattered calling: “Feed My sheep.” Beloved… the same man who denied Jesus in fear… stood up in Acts 2 filled with the Holy Spirit… and preached with such power that thousands were pierced to the heart. Three thousand saved. The coward became a witness. The broken became a builder. The fallen became a pillar. And why? Because Jesus doesn’t just forgive failures… He turns them into testimonies. THE GRAND FINALE And now Peter reaches the climax—like an orchestra swelling to its highest note… like the final firework bursting across the sky… He says: “…that you should follow in His steps.” That’s the call. That’s the point. That is Christianity in its simplest form: Follow Jesus. Not merely believe information about Him… but walk behind Him. Follow Him when it’s joyful. Follow Him when it’s lonely. Follow Him when it costs you. Follow Him when nobody claps. Follow Him when it hurts. Follow Him when obedience feels like death. Because beloved… There is a place in God where you stop merely believing… …and you start becoming like Him. And that is the sacred miracle of the Gospel: Christ doesn’t just save you. Christ lives inside you. And slowly… steadily… beautifully… He begins to reproduce His nature in your soul. His gentleness. His purity. His compassion. His courage. His obedience. His love. So that when the world looks at you… They don’t just hear words about Jesus… They begin to see His face again. LET CHRIST LIVE HIS LIFE THROUGH YOU Dear friend… The world is starving for a living Jesus. Not a religious Jesus. Not a debated Jesus. Not a political Jesus. Not a ceremonial Jesus. A living Jesus. And the wonder of the Gospel is this: He is alive… through you. You are His hands now. You are His voice now. You are His compassion now. You are His patience now. You are His fragrance now. You are His ambassadors. Your life becomes a walking letter… written for the broken, for the angry, for the wounded, for the addicted, for the ashamed, for the bitter, for the confused… A letter that says: Jesus is still here. Jesus still heals. Jesus still restores. Jesus still loves. Beloved… something has happened to men’s hearts in our day. Coldness has crept in. Selfishness has increased. Love has grown thin. People are tired of being used. And into this wounded generation… God is raising up believers who will not just preach Christ… But will carry Him. Because the greatest sermon you will ever preach… is the fragrance of your life. And that fragrance is Jesus… the Rose of Sharon. I feel the Holy Spirit calling us right now. Not into a performance. Not into empty religion. But into surrender. Into obedience. Into the beautiful life of Jesus… lived again… through you. Some of you have been trying to figure out your calling… And heaven is whispering: “To this you were called.” To follow Him. Some of you have been ashamed of your failures… And Jesus is still saying: “And you.” Some of you have been weary… and you’ve wondered if it’s even worth it to keep walking… and the Shepherd is standing in front of you today saying: “Come. Walk with Me again.” So right now, dear one… if you want to answer that call… if you want to lay your life down again… if you want to say, “Jesus… I will follow You… not only with my mouth, but with my life…” Then pray this with me: Lord Jesus… I hear Your call. I see Your Cross. I remember what You suffered for me. Forgive me for drifting. Forgive me for compromise. Forgive me for coldness. Forgive me for living for myself. Wash me again. Restore me again. Fill me again. I belong to You. My life is not my own. Lead me… and I will follow. Let Your love live through me. Let Your purity mark me. Let Your compassion flow through me. Make me a living example. Make me a witness. Make me a fragrance of Jesus. I will follow in Your steps. In Jesus’ name… amen. Beloved… if you prayed that with sincerity… He heard you. And the Shepherd is not disappointed in you. He is drawing you close. He is restoring your soul. And He is teaching you again how to walk… step by step… day by day… until the world sees Jesus in you.
