THE FAITHFUL FEW
When Small Becomes Great
“His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'" (Matthew 25:23)
Dear friends, the Lord is speaking something extraordinary to many hearts today—a message that will liberate those who feel unseen, unnoticed, and seemingly insignificant in the Kingdom. The Holy Spirit has been stirring this word for days: it's not about much done but well done.
Imagine a grand ministry conference with thousands in attendance. The vast auditorium buzzes with excitement as influential leaders, bestselling authors, and megachurch pastors deliver powerful presentations. Sessions on church growth strategies and expanding ministry influence fill the schedule. The atmosphere crackles with ambition and vision as attendees network and exchange business cards.
Then comes an unplanned moment that silences the room. The conference organizer introduces an elderly pastor no one recognizes—a man who has quietly shepherded a small rural congregation for over sixty years without acclaim. His church never grew beyond seventy people. As he shuffles toward the microphone with arthritic steps, many glance at their watches or check their phones, wondering about this unexpected interruption.
With hands trembling from age and a voice weathered by decades of faithful service, he speaks simply: "For sixty years, I've preached the Word every Sunday. I've sat beside deathbeds at midnight, dedicated newborns to the Lord, counseled marriages in crisis, and wept with the brokenhearted. I've never written a book or spoken at a conference until now. If the Lord asked what I've accomplished for His Kingdom, I could only answer, 'Nothing, Lord—nothing beyond what You deserved from a servant purchased by Your precious blood.'"
A holy hush falls over the gathering. Tears stream down the faces of “successful” ministers as the Spirit's conviction sweeps through the room. For nearly ten minutes, no one moves or speaks. In that holy stillness, something profound shifts—the world's definition of ministerial success crumbles as God's measure of greatness stands revealed through this humble servant.
Many reading this right now feel overlooked. You serve faithfully in the nursery each Sunday. You prepare communion elements that others partake of without knowing your name. You clean the church bathrooms when no one is watching. You visit the aged saints who can no longer attend services. You pray in the secret place for breakthroughs that others will get credit for.
Beloved, hear the heart of the Father today: He is not measuring your success by how much you've done but by how faithfully you've done what He's assigned to you!
Notice carefully the words of Jesus in the parable: "Well done, good and faithful servant." He didn't say, "Much done" or "Greatly done" or "Famously done." The Master's highest commendation is for faithfulness, not fame. Not quantity, but quality. Not visibility, but integrity.
Consider the faithful servants whose names are known only to God. There's the Bible school gardener who never cared about receiving a thank you but trimmed the grass with such care and held the beautiful flowers in his hands as if offering them directly to the Lord. He treated the campus grounds as holy territory to the best of his ability. Though students and faculty may have walked past him daily without noticing his labor, heaven has recorded every act of devoted service.
Imagine an elderly prayer warrior who rises before dawn each day, interceding for people she's never met. Perhaps it's a missionary family facing danger in a hostile region or a pastor struggling with discouragement. At their greatest need, the Spirit moves this faithful intercessor to pray specifically for their situation. They'll never meet her on this side of heaven, and they never know how God used her prayers to change their circumstances. Yet in eternity, what a beautiful reunion that will be!
These hidden servants have faithfully fulfilled their calling without recognition, without knowing the full impact of their obedience. Yet heaven knows. God sees. And when they enter glory, they will surely receive rewards equal to those whose ministries were visible and celebrated. Why? Because faithfulness is the currency of heaven.
The Lord sees your faithful service! He notices the tears you've shed in secret for others. He records every act of service performed without recognition. The Spirit says to many: "What seems small in the eyes of men looms large in the courts of heaven."
Remember, Jesus deemed the widow's two mites the most outstanding offering that day. The cup of cold water given in His name will not lose its reward. The prayers prayed when no one else was watching have been collected in golden bowls before His throne.
Some of you have been faithful in serving a small congregation for decades. Others have taught the same Sunday School class for years without recognition. Some have quietly supported missionaries while living modestly yourselves. I want you to know that your earthly obscurity does not diminish your heavenly reward—it enhances it!
Dear ones, when we stand before the judgment seat of Christ, the question will not be "How many followed you?" but rather "How faithfully did you follow Me?" Not "How well were you known?" but "How well did you know Me?" Not "How much did you accomplish?" but "How completely did you surrender?"
The Lord is healing hearts today—hearts that have been wounded by comparison, overlooked for promotion, or deemed "unsuccessful" by worldly standards. He is restoring joy to those who have secretly wondered if their small offering matters.
It matters. It matters more than you know.
Let us pray together: "Lord Jesus, help us measure success by Your standards, not the world's. Give us grace to be faithful in small things, knowing that in Your kingdom, the first shall be last, and the last shall be first. May we seek Your 'well done' above the applause of men. Make us faithful servants who find our greatest joy in pleasing You alone. Amen."
Walk in confidence today, beloved. Your faithful service creates ripples in eternity that you cannot yet see. One day, you'll understand that what seemed small to others was always monumental to Him.
With Love,
Steve Porter
