THE FALL OF HEROD
When Pride Builds an Empty Throne
*I would really appreciate it if you could keep me in your prayers today as I undergo cataract surgery on my right eye. I am hopeful that everything will go smoothly, and I won't require any further procedures as the doctor has suggested. Thank you so much for your support and prayers.

THE FALL OF HEROD
When Pride Builds an Empty Throne
"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18)
Good morning beloved, for I must share a solemn warning that burns in my spirit. Let us look together at the tragic story of Herod Antipas – a man who built his throne on pride's shifting sands, only to watch it crumble beneath him.
Oh, precious one, see how this ruler's fall didn't happen in a single moment! Like water slowly eroding a foundation, his destruction began with small compromises. First came the discarding of his wife for forbidden love, then the imprisonment of God's prophet whose words pricked his conscience. Pride whispered, "You are above God's law," and he listened.
Watch carefully, dear friend, how a single moment of reckless pride – a foolish oath made amidst dancing and wine – led to the murder of John the Baptist. See how fear of public opinion became stronger than fear of the Lord. When Jesus himself stood before Herod, he treated the King of Kings as mere entertainment, missing heaven's visitation through the blindness of his pride.
The sweet Master is sounding an alarm in these days! How many of us are making those same small compromises, justifying little sins, choosing the applause of men over the approval of God? Pride is a subtle poison that convinces us we're beyond correction, above rebuke, entitled to our desires.
You see, beloved, pride does three deadly things to our souls:
First, it blinds us completely to our desperate need for God. Like scales over our spiritual eyes, it convinces us we're untouchable, beyond the need for correction, sufficient in ourselves. Oh, what dangerous deception!
Second, compromise begins its deadly work, weakening our spiritual foundation one small sin at a time. Like termites in a wooden beam, these little compromises eat away at our integrity until suddenly the whole structure collapses.
Third, fear of others' opinions becomes our master, keeping us from standing boldly for truth and righteousness. How many times do we, like Herod, choose man's approval over God's command?
But oh, precious one, here's the glorious truth - Jesus offers exactly what Herod rejected! Where Herod chose pride, Jesus offers forgiveness. Where Herod chose compromise, Jesus offers redemption. Where Herod chose fear of man, Jesus offers complete restoration.
Think of it – every time pride whispers "protect your reputation," we can choose instead to protect our relationship with Jesus. Every time ambition says "promote yourself," we can choose to promote His kingdom. Every time fear says "compromise," we can choose to stand firm in His truth.
Come, precious one, let us learn from Herod's tragic end! Let us examine our hearts with holy trembling, asking the Lord to expose any pride lurking in shadowed corners. For truly, it's better to bow low now in surrender than to fall later in destruction.
But here is the beautiful truth that Herod never grasped – our God is not waiting to destroy us, but to restore us! His correction comes not to condemn but to protect. His discipline flows from a heart of perfect love that longs to see us seated with Him in heavenly places.
Will you respond to this warning with holy fear and humble hope? Will you let Him search your heart and uproot every seed of pride? For when we humble ourselves under His mighty hand, He lifts us up in due time to places of honor we never could have achieved through self-promotion.
Rise up, beloved! Not in pride, but in the beautiful dignity of a child of God who knows both their position and their dependency. Let us run – not walk – into the arms of our Beautiful Savior, where pride dissolves in the wonder of His love, and true greatness is found in becoming least of all.
For in the end, dear one, it's not about building our own throne, but about taking our place on the one He's prepared for us. Let Herod's fall become our foundation for rising – not through pride's elevation, but through love's sweet surrender to the King of Kings.
With Love,
Steve Porter
