THE HIDDEN SCHOOLING
Lessons From the King’s College of the Spirit
Good morning, dear friend,
There is a schooling not found in any earthly institution—a hidden curriculum designed by the Master Himself. Those who answer the call to carry His deeper message soon discover that the most significant lessons are not taught through outward blessings but through secret sorrows, fiery trials, and long nights of wrestling with God.
John Wright Follette often said that while many can see the anointing upon a life—the gifts of the Spirit, the eloquence, the fruit—few ever glimpse the hidden battles: the silent pain, the inward agony, the nights of the soul where everything is stripped away but Christ alone. Behind every genuine anointing lies a costly price, paid in the lonely hours of suffering and surrender.
John was a spiritual father to many, a gifted Bible teacher and author with extraordinary depth and perspective in his interpretation of the Word. He traveled extensively, impacting countless lives through his profound teaching, and went to his eternal reward in 1966 at eighty-two. His life and ministry deeply influenced my spiritual father, Wade Taylor, who likewise passed to his eternal reward in 2012. I have gleaned so much from this precious man of God, Brother Follette, over the years through his sermons and books, which are still available online.
When John ministered, he often shared that most of the time, others never knew the agony he faced, but powerful revelation came forth that transformed lives. He explained that when we walk in the spirit, we impart spirit and life that significantly affects others, though they don’t fully grasp where we obtained the manifest presence they can sense in our lives. While we remember all the pain and copious tears shed when we thought we would die, they can only see the deep anointing and wonder where it originated.
In His infinite wisdom, God uses these seasons for what Follette called His “School of the Spirit.” Walter Beuttler described it with another term: The King’s College—a place where souls are refined for eternal purposes. This is not punishment, dear one; it is preparation. It is how He shapes a vessel that can carry the weight of His glory without cracking under pressure or becoming prideful.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
— Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
How tender and wise our Father is. Nothing is wasted. Not one tear, not one heartbreak, not one trial. Like Joseph, whose life was marred by betrayal, imprisonment, and abandonment, we can say with confidence:
“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”
— Genesis 50:20 (NKJV)
Beloved, those who carry the deeper life message often must walk through “extra classes”—trials beyond the ordinary. Why? because their calling is not ordinary. They are being prepared to know Christ deeply and to reveal Him authentically to a weary, wounded world.
If you find yourself in such a place today, take heart. You are not forgotten. You are enrolled in the King’s College, handpicked by the Lord Himself for a divine purpose. The trials that feel like they will break you are the chisels He uses to carve His image more clearly into your soul.
Hold steady, dear one. Lean into Him. Trust the process. One day, you will see that every hidden battle, every night of tears, every moment of misunderstood suffering was a holy appointment—an unseen hand molding you into a vessel of honor fit for the Master’s use.
Be encouraged if you feel you are in the middle of a silent, hidden battle. The King is shaping you for something far greater than you can see. Your life will become a living testimony of His faithfulness—and like Joseph, you will look back and say, “God meant it for good.”
Stay the course. Stay in the School of the Spirit. Stay in the King’s College. He is working something glorious in you.
With love and prayers,
Steve Porter
