THE RUSTY NAIL
The Hidden Danger That Can Pierce the Soul
“Catch the foxes—the little foxes—that spoil the vines…” — Song of Solomon 2:15 (NKJV) Good morning, my dear friend. I’m glad you’re here today. Let me tell you a story— not one from my own life, but one that holds a kind of spiritual weight we all bump into sooner or later. There was a young man named Caleb. He lived in a quiet coastal town where the sea hummed like a lullaby. Most mornings, the fog wrapped everything like a soft blanket. Caleb worked the old wooden docks— boards worn thin by storms, sun, and time. But hidden danger often lives in familiar places. One fog-thick morning, he noticed a loose plank at the far end of the docks. Nothing dramatic. Just a slight tilt—an invitation to fix it later. A small thing… easily dismissed. The fishermen shouted for help, so he stepped over it and promised himself he’d return. He never did. Days passed. Caleb walked around that plank without a second thought. It became part of the scenery—an unnoticed hazard in a place he assumed was safe. Until the morning the hidden danger rose to meet him. The tide was low. The sun barely awake. Caleb hurried along the dock, arms filled with ropes, mind on responsibility. His foot slipped between two aging boards— and in that fleeting breath of chaos, a rusty nail, long and jagged, shot upward. It pierced his boot. Pierced his skin. Pierced the illusion of safety he had grown comfortable with. He gasped. Pain radiated through him. But deeper still came a realization: he had known about that loose plank. He had seen it. Stepped around it. Ignored it. What seemed harmless became harmful. What was small revealed itself as deadly. Rust. Infection. Lingering regret. A simple neglected moment led to a wound that nearly changed everything. THE PRINCIPLE: SMALL COMPROMISES CREATE DEEP WOUNDS Beloved… hear this in love: The enemy rarely attacks us with what is obvious. He waits in the quiet corners—beneath loose boards we keep stepping over. He hides in small compromises. He whispers in excuses. He thrives in the places we say, “I’ll deal with this later.” Rust doesn’t appear overnight. It grows slowly—quietly—on what is exposed and unguarded. So does sin. So does unforgiveness. So does unchecked bitterness. So does secret temptation. What we refuse to confront eventually finds a way to confront us. What we hide in the shadows will someday cry out for healing. Jesus warns us about little foxes—the small things we consider harmless but that quietly destroy the vineyard of our souls. But He doesn’t reveal these hidden dangers to shame us. He reveals them to heal us. LET THE GREAT HEALER REMOVE THE RUSTY NAIL Dear one… is there a loose plank in your own heart? Is there a hidden danger under the surface? Something you’ve stepped around for too long? A grudge you’ve refused to release? A temptation you’ve minimized? A quiet sin tucked out of sight? A wound you pretend doesn’t sting anymore? The Lord is not pointing to that place to expose you… but to rescue you. He sees the rusty nail beneath. He knows how deep it can pierce. And in His mercy, He invites you to bring it into His light before it wounds you further. Come to Him. Bring the hidden thing. Lay it down. Let Him cleanse what has been infected. Let Him restore what has rusted. Let Him strengthen what has weakened. He is gentle with the wounded. He is tender with the broken. And He is mighty to save. Beloved… the Great Healer waits for you. Come— and let Him make you whole. With Love, Steve Porter www.morningglorydevo.com 🙏🏼 If you’re carrying something heavy… don’t carry it alone. Write your prayer request in the comments.
