WATCH YE THEREFORE
A Robe and a Crown Await the Faithful
An old gospel song still stirs something deep within me: "Watch ye therefore, ye know not the day, when the Lord shall call your soul away…” The melody echoes the heartbeat of Scripture, the Spirit’s cry in these final hours: Be ready. Stay watchful. Keep your lamp trimmed and burning.
This song, often called “Robe and Crown,” isn’t just nostalgia—it’s prophetic hope wrapped in melody. It reminds us that the reward is sure for those who labor faithfully, endure the night, and press toward the dawn.
“If ye labor, keep striving for the right; ye shall wear a golden crown.”
What a promise. What a holy motivation to keep walking the narrow path.
The Robe of Righteousness
There is a robe waiting for you, beloved. Not stitched by human hands but woven by grace. The prophet Isaiah foresaw it:
“He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness…”
— Isaiah 61:10, NKJV
This robe is not earned through merit but received through mercy. Yet it is preserved for those who stay ready, who do not cast off the garment in compromise or slumber. There is also a wedding garment reserved for His faithful bride—those who move beyond mere salvation garments into the deeper things of the Spirit. As it is written, ’For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear’—for ‘the fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people’ (Revelation 19:7–9). But that, dear one, is a sacred unveiling for another devotion down the road.
The Crown of Glory
There is also a crown—a golden testimony of a life poured out for Jesus. Paul saw it clearly as he neared the finish line:
“Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day…”
— 2 Timothy 4:8, KJV
And not to him only. No, the crown is promised, “unto all them also that love His appearing.”
Do you love His appearing? Does your heart ache for the trumpet’s blast, for the eastern sky to break open with the glory of your coming King?
The Call to Watchfulness
Jesus gave a simple but sobering instruction to His disciples:
“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”
— Matthew 24:42, KJV
This is not passive watching. It is the alertness of a Bride waiting for her Bridegroom… the readiness of a servant who longs to be found faithful… the eager posture of a warrior, clothed in humility, standing at attention.
To watch is to walk in purity, to labor in love, to tend the fire on the altar of your heart. It means not being lulled to sleep by the comfort of this world nor distracted by its noise. It means remembering that this world is not our home—we’re pilgrims passing through.
Fitted for the Crown
Shall we be fitted for a crown one day?
Oh yes. If we endure, if we watch, if we overcome. He has promised to clothe His faithful ones with white garments, to place crowns upon their heads, and to say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant!”
“Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.”
— Revelation 3:11, KJV
The heavenly city awaits. Zion’s gates are opening wide. And just as soon as our feet strike the eternal shores, we’ll lay down our burdens, put on our robe in glory, and shout our story before the throne.
Let us live watchful. Let us walk worthy.
There’s a robe and a crown for those who finish well.
With Love,
Steve Porter
