WHEN MERCY PREVAILS
The Power of Intercession
“Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened." (Exodus 32:14)
Picture this dramatic scene - Moses on Sinai's heights, the tablets of God's law in his hands, while God's newly delivered people dance around a golden calf below. The very people who witnessed the Red Sea part, who ate heaven's bread, who heard God's voice thunder from the mountain, now bow before an idol of their own making.
Watch how God responds: "I have seen these people," He declares to Moses, "and they are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation."
What an offer! Moses could have become the new Abraham, the father of an entirely new chosen people. Yet in this pivotal moment, something remarkable happens - Moses chooses compassion over prominence, mercy over personal gain.
You see, faithful intercessors don't seek their advancement. Moses could have said, "Yes, Lord, these people are impossible! Start over with me!" Instead, he steps into the gap, pleading God's character back to Him. "Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel," he cries. "What about Your reputation among the nations? What about Your promises?"
Think of the astounding truth revealed here - the Creator of the universe allows Himself to be "persuaded" by the prayers of His servant. The Lord, who could have justly destroyed these rebellious people, instead shows mercy because one man dared to stand in the gap.
This wasn't just a historical moment—it's a picture of how God still works through intercessors today. When we see others in their failure, in their stiff-necked rebellion, we have a choice: We can stand back and critique or step in and intercede.
Rise up, intercessors! The world needs those who will see beyond failures and rebellion to discern God’s redemptive purposes. When you witness rebellion in your family, church, or nation, do not condone sin or excuse it; instead, approach it with the heart of Christ. Rather than falling into criticism, stand in the gap! Pray with boldness, reminding God of His promises, appealing to His holy character, and fervently championing His kingdom purposes above personal agendas. Let your intercession call forth repentance, transformation, and the fulfillment of God’s plan.
For indeed, beloved, we serve a God who delights in mercy more than judgment. Will you be His mercy-bearer? When we choose to intercede rather than accuse, to stand in the gap rather than stand in judgment, we partner with heaven's heart to see mercy triumph over judgment.
The sweet Master still looks for those who will pray like Moses—not for personal promotion but for His heart's purposes to prevail. May we be found faithful in the gap, pleading mercy for the stiff-necked until we see His glory cover the earth as the waters cover the sea.
With Love,
Steve Porter
